October 14, 2014 - Today's Word Is "Unfavorable"

Southampton, England

Unfavorable
. That is the word the captain used to describe the weather we could expect in the next day or two. Force 8 winds. Please pass the Dramamine.

An astute reader may have figured out that we are now on a cruise ship. Correct. We boarded the Emerald Princess today in Southampton.

The steps that brought us to this point are not the stuff blogs are made of: check out of hotel, taxi to Victoria Coach Station, motor coach to Southampton cruise terminal, check in, board ship, muster drill, unpack. Enough said.

At this early point in the cruise I have the impression that there are a lot of Brits on this cruise, most of the passengers are in their 70's. (In fact, the cruise director later announced that out of 3150 passengers, there were 390 from the US and about 2450 Brits.)

We went to the Welcome Aboard show for lack of anything else to do. (The movie tonight is Godzilla. Really? See previous paragraph on the average age on this ship.) The Princess Dancers performed a number. They were good - definitely better than average. Then a British comedian, Berni Flint came on stage. I'll admit it: I don't get British humor. We thought he was awful and left before his act was done. We spoke to some Brits who said they really enjoyed his comedy. Since this cruise begins and ends in England and the great majority of passengers are British, I have no problem with the fact that there will be British entertainment on this cruise. Just don't make me watch it.

How can a country that produces such exceptional BBC dramas (Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Endeavour, etc.) have such lame comedy?
