There is a "low pressure" area somewhere (i.e., a storm) that is making the water rough. Unfavorable, one could say. At about 9:15 am the Captain announced that they have decided to go to Vigo first instead of Funchal. (The original itinerary had us leaving Southampton on the 14th and arriving in Funchal on the 18th.) We may even have to spend the night in Vigo - we'll know later. At this point they think we can hit all the original ports, just in a different order. So we will be in Vigo tomorrow, instead of Oct 23.
I had to cancel the private tour I had arranged for Vigo. I emailed the tour company. I called the other four couples on the tour to let them know that I had emailed the tour company. The tour company replied within an hour. They were understanding, but they were fully booked for tomorrow. I called the other four couples to let them know we were on our own.
Today is a day at sea. We are relaxing. In the morning we went to the cafe for good coffee. we had a light lunch there, too. After lunch we went to the Cruise Critic Meet and Greet. It is a nice, friendly group of people. The motion of the ship makes me sleepy. After a short nap I did go to Zumba. I didn't make it all the way through - it was really crowded and I don't have the right shoes for it.
The water was pretty rough by the evening. I didn't feel up to dinner at the Crown Grille, so we postponed our reservation by one day and ate in the main dining room. At around 7:30 pm the Captain made another announcement. We would not be going to Vigo tomorrow because there were very high winds there - up to 50 knots. Instead we would be going to Funchal. As my fellow passengers would say: "Fancy that." The captain also said that the movement of the ship could be expected to increase later tonight. Passengers are being discouraged from going outdoors. Oh, goody. They are starting to put barf bags out in some of the public areas.
Tonight the movie is Maleficent. Now I get it. The movies are selected by a committee comprised of 14-year-old boys. Tonights show was "Piano Entertainment by Maria King." I don't have the musical vocabulary to describe her piano playing, so I'll put it into words we (Americans) can all understand: it sounded like the soundtrack to a 50's cartoon. The "entertainment" part was even worse. She was, of course, British, and her idea of jokes was . . . I don't know, let's just leave it at "unfunny." We left after about 10 minutes.
There was a band playing in the Explorer's Lounge that wasn't half bad, so we listened to them for a while. Mr. and Mrs. Magoo came and sat down opposite us. If I start wearing gigantic glasses and knitted scarves (indoors!) held on with giant brooches when I am old(er), just shoot me.
We invented a fun game today. You have to guess whether someone is British or American by looking at him/her. You can usually get an idea from their clothing, ladies' bras, shoes, and teeth. Then you try to overhear them speaking to see if you were right. I was wrong about Mr. and Mrs. Magoo (American).
